Music branding is different from other branding types in that it encompasses very specific elements. Music can be a commodity brand, concept brand, and identity brand all at the same time. If you look at the four major labels (Sony Music Entertainment, EMI Group, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group) and their respective subsidiary labels, they tend to cater to genre specific musicians. That’s because labels identify themselves by the type (concept) of music (commodity) they create. In today’s “Do-It-Yourself” music industry where the indie artist is also the label, branding now becomes an idea that must be utilized in order to effectively market music. Read more
